A Survey on the Internal Parasitism of the Laboratory Rat

Abstract

|
Attempts have been made to evaluate the internal parasitism of the laboratory rat. A total of 122 albino rats(Wistar) was killed by cervicla dislocation and necropsied; the digestive organs and livers were examined. Fecal samples were examined by floatation and sedimentation methods.
Six intestinal parasites were detected. Eimeria spp.(1.6%), Syphacia muris(1.8%), Aspicularis tetraptera(25.4%), Heterakis spumosa(23.8%), Hymenolepis diminuta(26.2%) and H. naha(8.2%). One hepatic parasite detected was Cysticerrcus fasciolaris, the larva of Taenia taeniaformis.
The results indicate that the latoratory rat should be checked for internal parasitism before they are used for research work.
